Grammar School

K-5th

Welcome to the Grammar School Program at New Covenant School in Anderson, SC! If you're looking for a classical Christian grammar school that fosters both intellectual and spiritual growth, you've found the right place.

A Classical model of education accompanied by methods from the teachings of Charlotte Mason provide the basic framework for our curriculum in the grammar school – more commonly known as elementary school. Together, the two give us a clear plan and resources for implementing an education that cultivates wisdom, virtue, delight, and wonder in our K5 through 5th grade students. Confidence in reading and proficiency in math are foundational and occur through teaching phonics alongside RightStart Math.  From our earliest grades, students are introduced to classic literature, poetry, music, and art, as well as U.S., Medieval, and Ancient History. An emphasis is placed on the Natural Sciences through regular nature study accompanied by nature journaling.

Our elementary school students are also working continuously to memorize poetry, folk songs, prayers, historical documents, speeches and creeds, scripture, Shakespeare, and other passages from Classical Literature. This noble content develops in our students valuable memorization and rhetorical abilities that will be built upon in the Upper School at New Covenant, and will continue to nourish their souls into adulthood.

In addition to our extremely thorough focus on core subjects, our elementary school students are introduced to Greek and Latin roots in 3rd grade and begin learning Latin for themselves in 4th grade. They also study famous artists, poets, and composers and participate in several handicraft projects a year, as well as listening to one of Shakespeare's plays in 3rd-5th grade.

Living ideas, living books and narration make up a large part of our history and literature studies in the elementary school alongside other practices derived from a Classical and Charlotte Mason approach to education. We believe education is an atmosphere and strive to use every corner of the school day to cultivate habits of virtue in our students, with the ultimate aim of growing them in their knowledge of God and the world He created.
