About the Board of Trustees

The New Covenant School Board of Trustees ensures New Covenant’s mission and vision are protected and executed. The Board provides strategic direction for the school and equips the Head of School with the necessary resources to accomplish its mission. As spiritual and strategic stewards, the Board is committed to ensuring that all decisions reflect New Covenant’s biblical values and commitment to classical Christian education. The Board meets regularly with the Head of School, the board’s one employee, to establish priorities, monitor outcomes, and set high level school policy.

Composition of the Board

The Board of Trustees is composed of servant leaders—members in good standing of New Covenant Church—who volunteer their time, wisdom, and resources to advance the school’s mission. In their fiduciary capacity, trustees serve as ambassadors, policy-makers, and guardians of both the vision and theological convictions of New Covenant School. Each trustee must demonstrate a deep love for Jesus Christ, a wholehearted embrace of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God, and a strong commitment to the school’s Reformed and classical Christian identity. Board members bring a range of spiritual gifts and professional experiences that enrich the school’s strategic direction and ensure institutional faithfulness over time. Many are current parents, alumni parents, or long-standing members of the New Covenant community who are committed to the flourishing of classical Christian education.

Role of the Board

Like other leading Christian schools, and consistent with best practice standards, the Board of Trustees is a governing, high level policy-making board but does not have direct oversight or involvement in the day-to-day management of the school. The Board entrusts the Head of School and other staff and faculty to execute operational functions, including the day-to-day operation of the school, hiring of personnel, assessing and developing staff, addressing all student and personnel issues including any disciplinary actions, and developing and managing the curriculum. The Board maintains regular communication with the Head of School and is updated on all key initiatives and issues, but the day-to-day management and decisions are the responsibility of the Head of School and leadership team.

Trustee Duties

  • Hire, support, evaluate, and oversee the Head of School.

  • Advise and approve annual goals and priorities consistent with the school’s strategic plan for the Head of School and subsequently, the leadership team to execute.

  • Approve and oversee New Covenant’s Annual Budget, including tuition rates and fundraising plans.

  • Participate in the development of strategic plans; provide guidance and approve plans.

  • Oversee all major high level policy changes or issues.

  • Provide guidance to address operational needs.

  • Connect personal networks with New Covenant to support development and fundraising efforts.

  • Engage effectively and build a collegial working relationship with the Head of School and other board members.

  • Trustees also actively pray for the school and promote its mission within their personal and professional networks.

Member Requirements

  • Be a member in good standing of New Covenant Church and take seriously the responsibilities and vows of church membership

  • Endorse the doctrinal commitments of New Covenant School, including the Westminster Confession of Faith, the school’s Statement of Faith, and its theological and moral standards as outlined in the bylaws

  • Must not be employed by New Covenant School or be the spouse of a current employee

Trustee Functions

Trustee candidates are identified by our Governance Committee, screened according to our bylaw qualifications, and voted upon by the full Board. All Trustees serve terms as guided by our bylaws. The full Board convenes five times per year during the school year with the Head of School plus a summer board retreat. The Board also invests in its own professional development by participating in various educational seminars during the year, which enhances its capabilities to effectively serve New Covenant School.

Governance

The Board of Trustees has the primary responsibility of ensuring that the school fulfills its Christian educational mission in a sustainable manner—aligned with biblical principles, consistent with the organization’s bylaws, and in compliance with applicable laws. The Board hires and sets the high-level policies for the Head of School, who carries out the day-to-day management and operational leadership of the school. New Covenant’s Board is self-perpetuating, meaning it identifies, evaluates, and appoints its own members in accordance with the bylaws. This governance model, aligned with best practices for independent schools, actively fosters continuity, mission alignment, and long-term leadership stability.

Committees

In addition to meeting as a full group of Trustees, the Board has also established various standing and ad hoc committees responsible for working with the Head of School on key initiatives. The board has three standing committees, including the Finance Committee, Governance Committee, and Head of School Support & Evaluation Committee. Each of these committees is chaired by a Trustee and includes other Trustees. It is also common for these committees to engage other community leaders as they consider various strategic initiatives.
