Last year, New Covenant School successfully began a basketball program by offering varsity and junior varsity teams for both boys and girls. This year our school is looking to capitalize on the successful athletic endeavor last year by adding varsity cross-country teams for boys and girls. Cross-country is an extremely fun and engaging sport. Students in grades 6th through 12th are eligible to be part of this year's team. Cross-country is a sport in which kids race 3.1 miles through fields, up and down hills, through woods, and on trails to see who can run the fastest.
Mr. Joe Canney, our school’s Headmaster, is coaching this year's team. Coach Canney was once a runner himself and has recorded personal bests ranging from a 15:51 5K to 2 hours 34 minutes for the marathon. Additionally, he has previously started two very successful youth running teams.
This season, the New Covenant School cross-country teams (boys and girls) will compete in at least five meets and they will culminate their season on October 15 by competing in the SCACS State Cross Country Meet.
Coach Canney reports that there are 20 athletes on this year's squad who are all working very hard and have extremely good attitudes about the work that it takes to be a great cross country runner.
The team has fully embodied Coach Canney's motto of ‘Run On’. The ‘Run On’ motto perfectly captures what it takes to be great at the sport of cross country; when athletes come across difficult days or barriers, they must persevere and ‘Run On’. That is exactly what this year's squad has done and in doing so they are bringing glory to the Lord.
The New Covenant School community is encouraged to support our newest athletic teams by praying for the athletes and their coach along with looking for opportunities to come out and view a meet to cheer our runners to ‘Run On’!
