In the fall of 2017 New Covenant re-launched its chess program with experienced coach and New Covenant parent, Mr. Daryl Dowty. The chess club meets once a week on Tuesdays after school and learns everything from the basics of chess to complicated strategies. Out of the chess club more serious players form the New Covenant Chess Team.
The NC Chess Team recently had the privilege to compete at the South Carolina Scholastic Championship in Columbia. The tournament was held at the South Carolina State Museum. There different grade sections that the players could compete in. They were K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12. More experienced players were allowed to play up for better competition.
The two students who represented New Covenant were 2nd grader Ayden Howard and 4th grader Daryl Dowty (Coach Dowty’s son). Both Ayden and Daryl won 3 games out of 5 in their respective sections. Daryl still had a chance for a 7th place trophy going into the final round but did not win that game. There were a total of 249 players from all parts of the state.
Coach Dowty was very impressed with the performance of Ayden Howard who was competing in his first tournament. He lost his first game in 6 quick moves but he stayed positive and had a good attitude. Ayden bounced back for his remaining four games, winning three of them.
Overall Coach Dowty was pleased with how the boys competed. He is excited for future tournaments and his hope is that more students will join the club because if there were just three more players in each section the New Covenant Chess Team could compete for a team trophy!

Congratulations to Ayden, Daryl, and Coach Dowty on a great chess tournament!
